Howard Winchester Hawks (May 30, 1896 –December 26, 1977) was an American film director, producer and screenwriter of the classic Hollywood era. Critic Leonard Maltin called him “the greatest American director who is not a household name.”
DEATH: Hawks died on December 26, 1977, at the age of 81, from complications arising from a fall when he tripped over his dog at his home in Palm Springs, California. He had spent two weeks in the hospital recovering from his concussion when he asked to be asked to be taken home, dying a few days later.
