American soldier, former slave, and first African American to graduate from the United States Military Academy at West Point

Henry Ossian Flipper (March 21, 1856 – April 26, 1940) was an American soldier, former slave and, in 1877, the first African American to graduate from the United States Military Academy at West Point, earning a commission as a second lieutenant in the US Army.

DEATH: In 1923, Flipper went to work in Venezuela as an engineer in the petroleum industry. He retired to Atlanta in 1931, and died in 1940.
